Teacher Observations

The informal observation of Timothy Leonardo at Bayside High School took place on 11/05/2025 during a Period 10 math lessonDuring this lesson, students participated in a student-centered activity focused on solving equations and word problems, utilizing group work and individualized guide cardsPrior to the lesson, the teacher designed the instruction to include built-in supports for common misconceptions and differentiated materials for both struggling and advanced learnersDuring the lesson, the teacher monitored student progress through formative assessments and offered immediate feedback while students engaged in peer collaborationI received a rating of Effective or Highly Effective in all observed categories except for 3c Engaging students in learning, where I received a rating of DevelopingComments from this observation include "The teacher created a student-centered lesson that incorporated group work with built-in supports" and "Your inclusive teaching approach ensures all students feel valued and included in the learning process".

The observation was conducted in an Algebra I class at Technology High School on 05/15/2025During this lesson, students were learning how to graph a system of linear equations to determine a solutionPrior to the lesson, the instructional sequence was designed using a gradual release model, building on prior knowledge of graphing and slope-intercept form while anticipating common student misconceptionsDuring this lesson, I utilized a scavenger hunt format to promote active engagement and movement, while providing differentiated supports such as anchor charts and IEP-specific accommodations for individual learnersI received a rating of Highly Effective in categories 1a (Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy), 1e (Designing Coherent Instruction), and 3c (Engaging Students in Learning)All other observed categories, including student behavior and assessment, received a rating of Effective, with the exception of Professionalism (4e) which was rated as EffectiveComments from this observation include "The scavenger hunt format keeps students physically and cognitively engaged, reducing off-task behavior" and "I am always impressed when I see the new and inventive ways you work with our most challenging students"

The observation was conducted in a self-contained Algebra 1 class on 04/17/2024During this lesson, students were working on the Quadratics unit, specifically focusing on graphing real-world problems such as objects being launched in the airPrior to the lesson, I anticipated student misconceptions regarding the terms "maximum" and "minimum" and planned physical demonstrations, such as standing on a chair and stomping on the floor, to anchor these conceptsDuring this lesson, I worked with a small group to reteach key concepts where students were stuck, breaking down the nuances of word problems to make content accessible for students with disabilitiesI received a rating of Effective or Highly Effective in all categories, with Highly Effective ratings in Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy, Designing Coherent Instruction, and Using Assessment in InstructionComments from this observation include: "You did an excellent job breaking down the nuances of the word problems, making the content accessible for all students" and "Assessment is fully integrated into instruction, through extensive use of formative assessment".

The observation was conducted in a self-contained Algebra 1 class on 01/18/2024During this lesson, students were working on graphing piecewise functions and analyzing exponential functions using the "I do, We do, You do" explicit instruction modelPrior to the lesson, the instruction was designed to align with the Algebra 1 Regents exam and included extensive differentiation and IEP supports such as visual aids, graphic organizers, and modelingDuring the lesson, I utilized a document camera for modeling and think-alouds, while also employing paraprofessionals to ensure students reached their potentialI received a rating of Effective or Highly Effective in all categories, with Highly Effective ratings specifically in Designing Coherent Instruction, Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport, Managing Student Behavior, and Using Questioning and Discussion TechniquesComments from this observation include: "The teacher elicits evidence of student understanding" and "Proliferate school improvement goals and exercise influence on teachers and students by serving students as an ILearn teacher"
